Medicare explained

Medicare is a federal health insurance program with different parts that help cover specific healthcare services. It is primarily for individuals age 65 and older, certain individuals under 65 with qualifying disabilities, and individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease or certain qualifying conditions.

Part A

Hospital Insurance

Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and certain home health services.

Part B

Medical Insurance

Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, durable medical equipment and some home health services.

Part C

Medicare Advantage

Offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. These plans may include additional benefits.

Part D

Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover the cost of prescription medications through private plans approved by Medicare.

Medicare Supplement

(Medigap)

Helps cover some out-of-pocket costs not paid by Original Medicare.
