Are You Eligible for Medicare?

Most people become eligible for Medicare when they turn age 65. You may qualify if:

  • You are age 65 or older and a U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • You or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years
  • You qualify through a disability
  • You have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
  • You have certain qualifying medical conditions

Under Age 65?

You may qualify if:

  • You have received Social Security Disability benefits for 24 months
  • You have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD)
  • You qualify through certain disability programs

Understanding Medicare

Medicare at a Glance

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for individuals age 65 and older, individuals under 65 with certain disabilities, and individuals with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

Part A • Hospital Insurance

Helps cover inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care and certain home health services.

Part B • Medical Insurance

Helps cover doctor visits, outpatient services, preventive care, durable medical equipment, therapy services and certain home health services.

Part D • Prescription Drug Coverage

Helps cover prescription medication costs through Medicare-approved private plans. Plans vary by premium, formulary, pharmacy network and cost-sharing structure.

Important Medicare Enrollment Dates

October 15 – December 7

Annual Enrollment Period

During this period you may:

  • Join a Medicare Advantage Plan
  • Change Medicare Advantage Plans
  • Return to Original Medicare
  • Enroll in a Part D Prescription Drug Plan
  • Change Part D Plans
  • Drop Prescription Drug Coverage

January 1

New Coverage Begins

Any changes made during Annual Enrollment become effective January 1. Coverage, benefits and costs for the new year begin at this time.

January 1 – March 31

Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment

If you are enrolled in a Medicare Advantage Plan, you may:

  • Switch to another Medicare Advantage Plan
  • Return to Original Medicare
  • Enroll in a standalone Part D Prescription Drug Plan

Changes generally become effective on the first day of the following month.

If you are new to Part B, you may qualify for a one-time preventive visit during your first 12 months. It can help you review your health history, discuss preventive services and create a plan for ongoing care.

Create Your MyMedicare.gov Account

Access your Medicare information 24 hours a day, view claims, review Medicare Summary Notices, track preventive services, check deductible status, order a replacement card and compare options.
